Freeview is the second digital TV system attempted by the government. The first, in 2000, cost NZ$6.8 million.
Sky TV launched New Zealand's first digital TV service in December 1998 and had a monopoly on digital satellite TV until the launch of Freeview in 2007.
Freeview is a non-profit organization providing free-to-air digital television and digital radio to New Zealand. The Freeview service is available via satellite throughout New Zealand.
